VDC - [Part 3] - TYPES OF VDC

Default VDC
  • When you will be first login into Nexus 7K Switch, then you will be in Default VDC .
  • When Nexus 7K Series switch is booted first, then, in the modular switch platform all interfaces of all line cards are placed in the default VDC.
  • VDC-1 is the default VDC
  • Default VDC always exists and can not be removed.
  • It is used to manage other VDCs
  • It can be used for normal data plane but recommended for management of chassis only
  • You can assign any interface to default VDC and it can forward the traffic like non-default VDC.
  • You can perform following tasks in default VDC.
  1. Creation, updation and deletion of VDC
  2. Allocation of Resources like Interfaces, memory
  3. Control Plane Policing
  4. NX-OS Up-gradation over all VDC
Admin VDC
  • You can create Admin VDC from the initial configuration wizard.
  • Basically Admin VDC is used to manage other VDCs.
  • Only Management interface will be assigned to Admin VDC.
  • We can create Admin VDC via below two methods.
  1. You can create Admin VDC via command 'system admin-vdc'  after booting of Nexus OS. Via this command  Default VDC will become Admin VDC.
  2. You can create Admin VDC via command 'system admin-vdc migrate new-vdc name' . All the configurations will migrate to New VDC from Default VDC.
  • If you will enable ADMIN VDC, then it will replaces the default VDC.
  • At the same time both Default and admin VDC cannot be present in Nexus Switch.
  • ADMIN VDC is not able to handle user traffic like Default VDC.
Non Default VDC
  • You can create Non Default VDC from Default VDC or Admin VDC.
  • If you will make any changes in Non Default VDC, then it will not affect other VDCs.
  • Each VDC has its own stored configuration file.
  • Non Default VDC is responsible to handle the user traffic,  interfaces can be allocated to it.
Storage VDC
  • Required Storage VDC, when you will need to implement SAN functions on Nexus Switch.
  • You can allocate two different types interfaces to storage VDC - FCOE Interface and Shared Interface
